Tracksuits become school uniforms for a day of healthy celebrations
Top marks go to Red Rose Primary School in Chester-le-Street as the whole school, including staff, dressed in tracksuits for the day in readiness to participate in aerobic classes and playground activities organised by the Year 6 games volunteers in celebration of their school being recognised as a healthy school.
To mark the event, the school held a special 'healthy day' assembly during which year 6 pupils, Sarah Hamblett and Jack Barna, were presented with the National Healthy School Status certificate by Elaine Jackson, healthy schools facilitator at County Durham Primary Care Trust (PCT).
School nurse, Carol Redhead and healthy schools facilitator, Elaine Jackson led activities and group discussion with each class covering dental health and the importance of looking after your teeth, and the damage to health from smoking.
The National Healthy School Standard, which is supported by County Durham PCT aims to help children make healthy lifestyle choices and includes healthy eating, physical activity, citizenship, emotional health and well-being, anti-bullying and sex and relationships education.
The school received their award for achieving the nationally accredited standard in healthy eating, physical activity and other core themes.
Elaine Jackson, from the PCT said: "It was nice to see the whole school, including teachers, participating in the activities that were on offer, everyone enjoyed themselves.
"The playground games leaders will continue to offer interesting and varied physical activities for all children to enjoy.
"A healthy school is one that is successful in helping its pupils to do their best and build on their achievements, and by raising their awareness of the importance of their health and well-being, we will hopefully see fitter, healthier people in the County Durham area in the future.
"I would like to congratulate all the staff and pupils at Red Rose Primary School on achieving this award."
Sue Bainbridge, head teacher at Red Rose Primary School said: "Staff and pupils from the school worked hard to achieve this award by looking at all areas of the school to see how life could be improved, identifying strengths and areas for development.
"The school focuses on many aspects of health and well being which include pupil self esteem andconfidence, maintaining positive relationships and coping with problems such as bullying.
Children are encouraged to value exercise and healthy eating choices and understand the impact these will have on their future life. The award endorses the many features related to health and wellbeing which are an integral part of our school and we are absolutely delighted to receive this award."
